The Story of City 52

Connecting Southend-on-Sea, England's 52nd city, through 52 weeks of culture, community, and energy.

Why "City 52"?

On 1 March 2022, Southend-on-Sea officially became the 52nd city in England. This status was granted as a permanent tribute to the late Sir David Amess, a champion of our coastal home who believed in its potential more than anyone.

But for us, "52" represents more than just a number on a list. It represents 52 weeks of energy. We believe that Southend isn’t just a summer seaside destination; it is a vibrant, year-round hub for live music, theatre, arts, and community life.
